Background of the study:
Mentorship has emerged as a pivotal element in career development, particularly among young professionals navigating competitive urban job markets. In Lagos Island, mentorship programs have gained traction, influencing career trajectories and professional growth (Brown, 2024). This study delves into the dynamics of mentor–mentee relationships, the transfer of tacit knowledge, and the resultant improvements in professional competencies. Mentors provide guidance, networking opportunities, and strategic insights, essential for navigating complex career pathways. As Lagos Island evolves into a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, the role of mentorship becomes even more significant (Adams, 2023). It not only fosters individual career progression but also contributes to organizational success and industry development (Clark, 2025). By integrating theoretical frameworks with practical case studies, this research aims to elucidate the specific mechanisms by which mentorship catalyzes career advancement. The study addresses the variability in mentoring quality, the importance of structured programs, and the impact of socio-economic factors on mentoring efficacy. This comprehensive investigation seeks to bridge gaps between academic theory and practical implementation, ensuring that both mentors and mentees can derive maximum benefits from their professional relationships.
Statement of the problem:
Young professionals in Lagos Island face significant career development challenges due to rapid industry changes and limited access to experienced guidance. The scarcity of structured mentorship programs has led to inconsistent career growth, inadequate professional networking, and unclear advancement pathways (Brown, 2024). There is a critical need to examine how effective mentorship can address these challenges, improve skill acquisition, and foster leadership. The study investigates the gap between the availability of mentorship and its tangible benefits for career progression (Adams, 2023; Clark, 2025).
Objectives of the study:
To assess the influence of mentorship on the career development of young professionals in Lagos Island.
To identify the key elements that contribute to effective mentor–mentee relationships.
To recommend strategies for enhancing mentorship programs.
Research questions:
What is the impact of mentorship on career advancement for young professionals in Lagos Island?
Which elements of mentorship most significantly contribute to professional development?
How can mentorship programs be improved to better support career progression?
Research Hypotheses:
Effective mentorship positively impacts career development.
The quality of mentor–mentee interactions correlates with professional success.
Structured mentorship programs yield higher career satisfaction among young professionals.
Significance of the study:
This study underscores the vital role of mentorship in career development, offering insights that may inform improved mentoring practices and policies. Enhanced understanding could lead to better program designs that benefit both individuals and organizations (Clark, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study focuses exclusively on mentorship among young professionals in Lagos Island, Lagos State, examining structured programs and informal relationships. It does not extend to other demographics or regions.
